Keebler Magic Middles

Keebler Magic Middles are my top most favoritest discontinued food product. I was huge on the Mini-Middles, which were tiny bite sized cookies filled with little bits of creamy chocolate in the middle. There's a lot of odd speculation as to why they're no longer made, but you can find out more about that on the Magic Middles wiki. Now you can also see my vein attempt to recreate these enchanted culinary delights.

OH GOOD GEEZ I REMEMBER THOSE COOKIES AND NOW I'M HUNGRY.

For serious, they were amazing. I just don't know how they were filled--probably with some kind of elf magic or injector gun. Except where is the hole in the cookie for the chocolate to be inserted?

I may lose sleep over this mystery. Your last batch of cookies look tasty enough, I suppose.

I thought about this a little too much today and determined that one can possibly recreate the Magic Middle in two ways:

      1) Mold a really, REALLY hot soft fresh-baked cookie over a dome-like object, fill with a Nutella-like goo substance, then cap with a half-baked cookie and continue to bake for a couple of minutes until crisp. (The center will melt a little but the pan won't be soaking with sticky chocolate goo...hopefully. The downfall? This would take a while.)

2- Turn a mini-muffin tin upside down on a cookie sheet, plop cookie dough on top of each domed tin, bake for a few minutes. Allow the dome-shaped cookies to cool, then fill with chocky goo and cap with a thinly-rolled layer of cookie dough. Bake the cookies in the oven (upside-down) until the bottom is sealed. Yes, this does require filling the cookies before baking (again) but they'll look like...I don't know what...if they aren't done like that. Wonky, I guess.

LOL, I might just try this...

oh, hell yes. I didn't get Magic Middles too often, but I bought Mini Middles ALL the fucking time in junior high, from the snack cart. They were like 25 cents a bag, so I would get 4 for a buck, and slloowwllly strectch them out alll day, until I was eating the last few, after the bus dropped me off, walking down my 1/4 mile driveway. Then I would have to keep the crumpled up bag in my jacket pocket, or my backpack, to take and throw away on the bus, or at school.

Really, this article made me laugh laugh! Mystie, your Magic Middles looked pretty good, considering you are not a magic elf with magic elf baking powers... But hey! ya gotta have goals, right?

I really am diggin' this new format, I lahk it a loht.

Nothing could beat the mini version of Magic Middles. I'd throw a handful of those in a bowl and pour milk on them to create what was probably the most unhealthy breakfast snack ever.

Here is a webpage describing "the caramilk secret" which i would think might be similar...

    http://www.mindmagazine.com/article.php?articleID=25

alternatively, you could try freezing the chocolate before cooking, cooking '2-part' cookies, filling them, then 'painting' a dough lightly on (while still warm) and letting the hot cookie 'cook' the light layer...

to my mind, your most significant problem is that you need a liquidy texture to the fudge... but good luck!

If you succeed, I'll probably start making them myself.

you can actually recreate a similar recipe.( not exact because alas, nothing ever is)
with the chilled cookie dough of my choice, i have rolled chilled ganache into balls, then rolled out a TBs or so of cookie dough, wrapped it around chocolate, then flattened the ball a bit on cookie sheet with back of a glass. I aslo fill with Peanut butter balls and chilled caramel.. you need a center firm enough to wrap, yet soft enough to sqish down wit the glass.

I love these cookies, I remember watching TV in the playroom when I was younger snacking on mini middles. I thought for a while that my mom had stopped buying them because I ate them too much and they were fattening. I remember asking her to buy me some and she said the store didn't have them anymore. I think these cookies must have been really good if we still think about them so many years later. Another cookie I remember liking a lot were those big roundish ones shaped like different dinosaurs, the bumpy ones were my favorite to eat.

I'll be on the watch for a receipe and for those sneaky elves. I'll keep you posted! Thanks for the entertainment today work was getting kind of boring!

Well, this may not be how keebler did it, but this Nabisco patent: http://www.google.com/patents?id=yfIzAAAAEBAJ&dq=4762723

describes a something similar. Basically, they make a long ribbon of filled dough, then force it through an "Extruder-cooker" onto a conveyor belt. Machines then pinch and cut the baked (but still soft) dough into round cookies.

The cookie dough and filling seem to have some special (or well-controlled) properties that allow them to be baked at the same time without nasty frosting messes.

Nevertheless, it's not something you can do at home unless you can buy a conveyor belt and extruding equipment on eBay.

Those are my top 3 favorite snacks of all time, and they are gone! Now I gotta settle for chunky chips ahoy, or shrek cereal, or..... well nothin even comes close to choco-bliss! But one question still remains....How the FUCK did they get the chocolate filling in the MAGIC MIDDLES!!!

My dad and I would eat them like crazy, my mom would have to buy like 2 packs a week. We were both soooooo sad to see them discontinued, so we started with oreo's and milk witch are no comparisson to the magic middles! I have often thought about trying to recreate them, but no idea what kind of chocolate the middle was made out of!!! Dam them elves for their selfishness!!!
