Twilight Falling

Some months ago I was recommended the Twilight series by my boyfriend's mother. But between studying for the test from Hell and using my time at lunch to finish up Blood of the Fold by Terry Goodkind, I was only able to pick up the first Twilight book a few weeks ago. I managed to devour it within a week, and finished the second one, New Moon just last night. I'm positively in love, spewing buckets of fan girl jizz all over my bed while I cuddle up in my blanket reading the tales of Bella Swan. While I've grown past oogling over message boards and writing fan fiction, it feels great to reconnect with my inner teenage fan girl and her array of overemphatic emotions that left me to cry so hard reading New Moon that I physically gave myself a sinus headache.
My fan boy, however, has found the obsession laughable. He has an pronounced knowledge of vampire lore, and I've been making him feel particularly horrified about taking me to see the Twilight movie. I didn't want him to cause a scene in the theater, so I had to tell him ahead of time that the vampires in this particular tale do not turn to dust in sunlight -- they sparkle. Between that and the throngs of horny teenage girls at the theater, I'm still surprised he managed to suffer through the ordeal in relative silence.
I was abundantly excited to see the film, expecting an emotional masterpiece with high-intensity action and effects. From the beginning scene, I had my doubts, and I was right to have them. The movie was drab, emotionless, and lacked any sense of magic. In fact, there were barely enough scenes to even allow the teenage girls to properly coo over Edward Cullen. Even the soundtrack was mundane. I expected things to be changed, scenes to be cut, but never did I expect to feel like I was watching a schmaltzy art flick. Bella Swan seemed to have the emotional range of a fish and I'm undecided if this was contributed to bad acting or bad directing. Perhaps both.
I wanted to leave the theater swooning and instead felt leaving unsatisfied and slightly cheated. I loved the Harry Potter books as well as the movies and was able to take them as two separate entities. Unfortunately, the Twilight movie was like using the Michelangelo's David as a lawn ornament. I'll be shocked if watching the movie gives anyone an itch to go out and read the book.

Books are always better than their movie adaptation.

I was also very upset leaving the theater after seeing Twilight. I have read the books and have anticipated the day I would see the movie for months and months. I took my best friend along in the hopes that we would have a new favorite movie together; it didn't disappoint us in making it to our FAVORITE BAD MOVIE LIST, right next to Glitter. Bella was laughable, I can't tell you how many times I wanted to shove her aside and step in her place to at least deliver one line without tripping over words. It was painful and I really tried so hard to like it. The scenes left much to be desired and it was like watching a very dull couple talk about very dull things. At one point I was more focused on how to pull apart my cotton candy then a "thrilling" scene. The only thing that saved me from not walking out of the theater from that crap storm of a movie was my best friends comments. We tried to limit the volume of our laughter with our sarcastic comments knowing there were swooning teens in the theater who wouldn't hesitate putting gum in my hair for speaking ill of their beloved Bella and Edward. Edward tried to save those scenes but Bella's acting was just so horrid. The one good thing about the film was the guy who played Jasper. Thank God he was so good looking! I'm sad about the movie but happy to hear that you didn't like it either plus you had the exact same faults I did with the movie.I felt like I was going crazy for a while! Sorry if I rambled, as you can see, I am pretty upset but I'm trying not to let the movie spoil the books for me. Let's just hope that the reviews and not the millions they got will prevent them from making New Moon into a movie. It certainly looked like they left it open for it though!

I went to a midnight showing and the movie was not great. I am a big believer in giving things a second chance so the next morning I went to see it again and found it to be much better. I think this really is a movie you have to watch twice to appreciate. Don't get me wrong, you aren't going to walk away hoping for an academy award or anything, but you will walk away thinking better of the movie because you were able to stop comparing it to the book you loved so much. Give it another try and let me know what you think!
