My Buddy and Kid Sister
In 1986 Raggedy Ann and Andy were told to hit the dusty trail as Hasbro made way for My Buddy and Kid Sister. There were new overalled dolls on the scene, and this pair laughed in the face of yarn hair.
While My Buddy was arguably used as a prototype for the Chucky doll in the 1988 horror movie Child's Play, the sanctity of My Buddy has remained fairly in tact. From his bowl cut to his tiny sneakers, there wasn't a patch on My Buddy that wasn't just as cute as his little button nose. His female half, Kid Sister, had girls everywhere clammoring to take the braided pigtail sweetheart for a ride on their big wheel.
The original Hasbro version had changes of clothes available, but they took away from the "classic" look of the dolls. In the video you can see that the clothes were removable, but the dolls shown at the end clearly have their clothes firmly affixed onto their bodies. When Playskool took over the line in the 1990's they opted out of having seperate clothes and pedophiles everywhere threw their hands up in disgust.
The My Buddy doll was a sweet success in getting boys to play with dolls. Sure they weren't having tea parties or playing dress-up, but Buddy was always content to watch you play hours of Megaman without complaining or asking when it was his turn. Best of all, he didn't eat up all your Pizzarias and Yoo-Hoo.

I never had a Kid sister doll...I was more into barbies. My brother and me had this friend with a my buddy...he would lay it on the ground and jump off our porch to do belly flops on it.

I never got into My Buddy. It was still too much like a doll for my taste. I did get a My Pet Monster for Easter one year though and loved it. As with everything, I was always more attracted to the scarier versions of things.
What's scarier to me now though, is the thought of what became of all those poor unsuspecting My Buddy's and Kid Sisters once they fell into the hands of single, middle aged men many years later.
