Damn you, Family Circle

I haven't been to a Wal-Mart in weeks, and I feel kinda cool about that. I'm saving a lot of money by grocery shopping at stores that only sell groceries. That may change in a few months when the new Supercenter opens in town, but for now I'm kinda digging not having the temptation of an electronics section when I'm getting a gallon of milk.

There's still some distractions that can't be avoided. I've been roped into buying Family Circle more times than I'd care to admit. The first glance draws me in with promises of 5,000 different recipes and when I see that shining beacon of a $1.99 price tag, the compulsion buy takes control.

After flipping through articles on how to get your child to do their homework and the horrors of sexting, I get to the promised plethora of recipes. It never fails that the only appealing recipe requires some kind of ingredient that I would have to import from Guatemala and the rest are things I know how to make by heart. Grilled cheese, chocolate chip cookies, meatloaf.... blah. Yet I keep buying them, as if there is some secret miracle chicken dish that I have never seen before contained within.

I think I'm chicken jaded.

I just spent the last few minutes catching up on the last few posts you put up. I've been away from this place for way too long.

I don't think I've yet reached the point where I'm chicken jaded, but I'm starting to get there. My cooking prowess pretty much consists of me making variations on the same 5 meals over and over again, and most of those involve chicken in some form.

In other news, that was an angry, dark vidja you made earlier. That's one mouth that I would not want to have my nuts grinded in.

You really went to Fright Night alone?
You are a very cool girl, girl.
Wish I was there, totally wish I was there.

Sorry I have been so behind and lazy on posting over on CC. I've been keeping up with your Facebook posts and occasional tweets instead.

I just wanted to say that you know I adore you to pieces and if you ever need some ingredient that can only be imported from Guatemala hit me up! Me and my friend Mike were at a Mexican market just last week and bought some funky red refried beans in a can from guess where? Guatemala! I was disappointed because the beans weren't nearly as blood red as the stuff on the outside of the can. What a let down.

I am obsessed with grocery store hunting. I've bought some crazy crap in my day. I think by far the strangest things were caltrops (these demon head looking water chestnuts) and this Chinese medicinal soup mix that included a whole dried starfish.

Yes, this is a food I thought you would appreciate that appearance. I love funky food items but I have never had the guts to actually eat one of these even though they're just a water chestnut! http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8qeECYXdf3M/SsavPXXHPGI/AAAAAAAAE9M/J6PGJEDaBsM/s400/DSCN5464.JPG

Here's what I hate about Family Circle and all those other womens' magazines. Every issue tells you that they have a great new diet and ways to stay thin blah blah blah and then on the same cover they have delicious recipes and desserts for you to try out.
